Pick up Your Shovel
Genesis 26:12-26
Wells represent life, survival, prosperity, wealth and our inheritance. A well is an existing natural source of water or a hole drilled in the earth to reach the source. The word of God records many encounters where a well was a life-giving force. When Ishmael, son of Abraham was about to die, God opened the eyes of Hagar that she saw a well from which the boy was fed and lived. (Genesis 21: 19) The Well is the source of water and water is the source of life. Speaking to the woman at the well, Jesus said, the water I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life (St. John: 4:14)
There was a famine in the land but Isaac planted crops in the land and reaped a bountiful harvest. He became very wealthy and this stirred up enmity with the Philistines so much that they plugged up all the wells that Isaac’s father Abraham had dug. This was Isaac’s inheritance.
They thought they were cutting off the life flow from Isaac and his family and his livestock and his crops, water was life. They said if we cant have this prosperity neither can you. Three times Isaac is about to celebrate water but the Philistines robbed him and clogged up the well again. What next???
Isaac kept on digging even when he was in the valley in Gerar. Many blessings are waiting for us that are shut up and covered over by the enemy but the Holy Spirit is saying in this season revisit the promises, reopen the wells they are our inheritance. Keep on digging. Dig through rejection, discouragement, failure, oppositions, whatever may be setting you back. Dig through, if you are coming up dry, dig deeper.
At last, a breakthrough came, the servants found a new well, with running water. A well where there was no contention and there was freshwater.
Isaac named the well Rehoboth meaning an open space, a space of enlargement, a place of prosperity a place I can call my own. (Genesis 26: 22). You may feel like the Philistine is contending for your family, your space, your financials. Let the oppressor in my land be broken in pieces (Psalm 127:5)
The enemy is contending to cut off your resources, your very life. I want to prophesy to you, pick up your shovel and dig and clear. The blocking dirt will become your soil of fertility. God has prepared a new well for you with running water. Your Rehoboth is so close. Digging is hard work. Get down on your knees and dig. Water is breaking forth even now. Possess your well.
